Presidential Candidate Julian Castro – Meet and Greet

On Friday, July 26th Presidential Candidate Julian Castro visited the Meskwaki Settlement for a Meet and Greet hosted by the Tama County Democrats. Castro, who served as Housing and Urban Development secretary under President Obama and is a former San Antonio, Texas, mayor, is one of some 25 seeking the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. He is also the first 2020 Presidential candidate to create a policy specifically for & about Indigenous communities. “Our Indigenous communities are rich with their own history, with so many different assets that they bring to this country of ours,” Castro said. “I want to make sure that we respect their sovereignty, that we honor our treaty obligations and that we recognize that doing right by Indigenous communities is not only a matter of the right thing to do but the constitutional thing to do.” Christina Blackcloud honored Castro with a beaded medallion for taking time out of his schedule to visit the Meskwaki Settlement. Guests also had the chance to meet and speak with the candidate.
