Toledo, IA, October 8 – The cities of Tama, IA and Toledo, IA will come together to jointly proclaim Monday, October 14, 2019 and the second Monday of each October hereafter to be recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day in the cities of Tama and Toledo. Mayor Mike Carnahan (Tama) and Mayor John Llyod (Toledo) will sign the proclamation on Monday, October 14, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the Reinig Toledo Civic Center, 1007 S Prospect Dr, Toledo, IA during the regular meeting of the Toledo City Council.

This day recognizes the land now known as the cities of Tama and Toledo as home to Indigenous People since time immemorial, and without whom, the building of our two cities would not have been possible. This day will also serve to recognize and honor the relationship between the cities of Tama and Toledo and the Meskwaki Nation, federally recognized as the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa.

Tama and Toledo join a growing number of government entities across the country that have recognized the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day, in order to promote appreciation, reconciliation, understanding, friendship, and continued partnerships among all of its people and the Indigenous Peoples of this land.

We invite all members of the communities of Tama and Toledo along with members of the Meskwaki Nation and the Indigenous community in Iowa to join us on Monday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m. for a signing ceremony of this join Indigenous Peoples day proclamation.
