MNPD was excited to host its first annual Shop with a Cop Event on Sunday, December 1st! We had the chance to meet and spend time with eight children (grades 1-6). We had two groups of four children. The children were nominated by Principals and Teachers from the Meskwaki Settlement School (4) and South Tama County School (4). Each child had their own dedicated police officer partner to build a relationship with and of course SHOP!!
The kids experimented with the police equipment, went shopping at Wal-Mart, enjoyed an awesome meal at the tribal center, listened to Christmas music, and wrapped gifts as a team. Chad Keahna, Nisan Kapayou and Tonya Bear donated additional gifts for the children’s families.
We had tons of community support for the event. Leigh Lasley, Allison Lasley, Tonya Bear and her Lil “Buddy” the elf, Kiyanna Pushetonequa, Kayla Wanatee, Sal Diego, and more all contributed to the event. We want to give an extra special shout out to Kay Waseskuk for taking the role of head cook. “We couldn’t have done it without you Kay!!”
We could feel the positive impact from the event and could not be happier about it. We had a great time and are already looking forward to next year! -MNPD
