Wm. Jeff Kahrs, Regional Director of Region 7 of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, met recently met with members of the Meskwaki Tribal Council; Anthony Waseskuk, Chairman, Delonda Pushetonequa, Treasurer, Apollo Davenport, Member, Bessie Scott, Executive Director, and several members of staff representing the Meskwaki Family Services, Meskwaki Child Support and Meskwaki Health Clinic.
Mr. Kahrs was appointed Regional Director of Region 7 of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in November 2017. As a presidential appointee, Kahrs provides executive leadership as the primary representative for the Secretary of Health and Human Services. In this role, Kahrs oversees HHS activities in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, and represents the department in its work with nine federally recognized tribes. The Office of the Regional Director, based in Kansas City, Mo., also has responsibility for intergovernmental and external affairs, which brings together federal, state, local and tribal governments and private-sector partners.
Mr. Kahrs provided a Q & A over topics which included the future of federal funding for Social Programs such as Medicaid, ICWA and Child Care . Mr. Kahrs also provided information on the current legislative strategy for combating the Opioid Crisis and how Congress plans to present a bi-partisan funding package for approval by the President.
